Barcelona thrills with a historic opening stage of the Grand Départ of the 2026 Tour de France
Barcelona got the 2026 Tour de France underway with an opening stage marked by excitement, a tremendous public turnout and a route that made the city the epicentre of the cycling world.
Barcelona hosted a historic opening stage of the Grand Départ of the 2026 Tour de France this Saturday, becoming the epicentre of the cycling world. Thousands of spectators lined the city’s streets to watch the 19.6-kilometre team time trial, which started and finished in Barcelona and culminated in a spectacular finale on Montjuïc.
Victory went to Visma | Lease a Bike, which completed the course in 21 minutes and 47 seconds, finishing 8 seconds ahead of Netcompany INEOS and 12 seconds ahead of UAE Team Emirates-XRG. The result saw Jonas Vingegaard become the first overall leader and don the yellow jersey of the 2026 Tour.
With a tremendous public turnout, a festive atmosphere across the city and activities at the Fan Park, Barcelona successfully brought to a close a day that has already become part of cycling history and now gives way to the second stage of the 2026 Tour de France.
