Barcelona unites tennis and cycling by twinning the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell and the Tour de France
Barcelona twins the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell with the Tour de France, which sets off from the city on 4 July 2026, strengthening its role as a host of major international sports events.
The central court of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell – Trofeu Conde de Godó hosted an institutional ceremony on Wednesday afternoon to twin this prestigious tennis tournament and the world’s most important cycling competition: the Tour de France, which this year gets under way in Barcelona on 4 July.
Representatives from the two sports events, from Barcelona City Council and from the Government of Catalonia took part in a symbolic ceremony underlining the city’s desire to continue hosting major international events.
The ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni; the chair of the Reial Club de Tennis Barcelona-1899, Jordi Cambra; the vice-chair of the Tour, Pierre-Yves Thouault; the Minister for Sport with the Government of Catalonia, Berni Álvarez, and the Councillor for Sport, David Escudé.
One of the key moments was the awarding of the Barcelona jersey to the tennis club, a piece designed especially for the Tour de France 2026 and presented in the morning as part of the tournament.
The ceremony symbolised the connection between the two sports disciplines of tennis and cycling, represented by two events with a significant international profile. With this gesture, Barcelona strengthens its backing for sport as a means of driving international projection and continuing to consolidate a historic 2026 in the sphere of sports.
